UK Airports to Launch Contactless Border Processing

The UK government is preparing to roll out new contactless border technology at Birmingham and East Midlands airports, with broader deployment across major UK airports expected by early 2027.

The new process will allow British passport holders to complete arrival checks using facial recognition technology, removing the need to present or scan a passport at immigration control. Officials have also indicated that the system could eventually be made available to other travellers who currently qualify for eGate access.

The initiative is designed to improve the arrival experience by helping passengers move through border controls more efficiently. While the technology changes how travellers are processed upon arrival, it does not affect existing immigration rules or entry requirements. Travellers should continue to carry their physical passports, which remain necessary for airline check-in, boarding and international travel.
